現在絶賛上演中の英国、サドラーズウェルズ劇場より、演出のジョナサン・チャーチ氏からメッセージが届きました。デルタ株による再度の感染拡大という事象はありながら、国民へのワクチン接種がほぼいきわたったと言われる英国ではほとんどの規制が取り払われ、人々は日常を取り戻しつつあるようです。抑圧され、疲弊させられたのちの安堵感と解放感の中、今この作品を英国と日本とで上演できることについての意義や感慨など、リアルに語っていただきましたので、ぜひご一読ください

『雨に唄えば』は、2020年、東京の美しい東急シアターオーブで公演する前に、ロンドンのサドラーズウェルズ劇場で公演するはずだったおよそ18ヶ月後に、私はこの原稿を書いています。この18ヶ月の間、新型コロナウィルスによって両国と作品に何が起こるか、誰にも想像できませんでした。

パンデミックが終わったわけではありませんが、東京ではオリンピックが世界を魅了し、ロンドンのウエストエンドは再び劇場がオープンし、そしてこの『雨に唄えば』はまさに「最初」の観客たちへの最高にハッピーな上演となりました。希望の光です。 英国の私たちにとっては、長い閉鎖期間の後、他の人々と一緒にライブパフォーマンスを祝い、アーティストや出演者のスキルを再び賞賛することがとても重要だと感じています。

『雨に唄えば』は、このような再開の機会のために創られたようにも感じます。愛とユーモアにあふれ、人生を謳歌しています。観客は、文字通り歌い、踊り、笑いながら劇場を後にするのですが、これは私たちが経験してきたコロナ禍の中ではとても必要なことです。

3度目の東京公演では、並外れた才能を持つアダム・クーパーがカンパニーを率いていますが、「雨に唄えば」のオリジナル映画が1952年に制作され、1927年に時代設定されていることを思い出しました。この2つの年代は、いずれも戦後のアメリカの復興期であり、人々はエンタテインメントと希望を必要としていました。さまざまな意味で、今の私たちにぴったりのショーだと思います。

また、優れた技術力があり、意欲溢れる出演者のほとんどが18ヶ月前にこの仕事に同意し、驚くべきことに、1年後に延期となったロンドンと東京公演にも、信念を貫いてプロジェクトに参加してくれるのです。

私たちは、サドラーズ・ウェルズと一緒に、この新しいプロダクションを実現してくれた東京公演のパートナーに深く感謝します。 私たちがこの作品を再び作ることを楽しんだように、皆さんもこの作品を楽しんでください。

I am writing this note nearly 18 Months after we had planned to open Singin in The Rain at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London in 2020 before moving to the beautiful Theatre Orb in Tokyo. Who could have imagined what the last 18 months would hold for both countries and for the production as a result of Covid.  

Although the pandemic is not over the Olympics is currently dazzling the world in Tokyo and London’s West End is open again and this new production of Singin in the Rain has played to its first (large and happy) audiences.  Beacons of hope.  For us in the UK it feels so important after a long period of lockdown to celebrate live performance with other people and to celebrate the skill of our artists and performers again.  

It also feels like Singin in the Rain was made for such a re-opening occasion. It is full of heart, humour, and is such a celebration of life. It sends its audiences literally singing and dancing and laughing out of the theatre which is so very much needed after what we have all been through.  

As we have worked on the show again, for its 3^rdvisit to Tokyo with the extraordinary Adam Cooper leading the company, we reminded ourselves that the original film was made in 1952 and was set in 1927, both dates following the war and a time of rebuilding for America when people needed entertainment and hope.  In so many ways the perfect show for us all now. 

We have also been humbled by the commitment and skill of all our performers, most of whom agreed to do this job 18 months ago and have amazingly kept faith and stayed with the project when it was moved over a year later to come and perform with us in London and Tokyo. 

We are incredibly grateful to our partners in Tokyo who along with Sadler’s Wells have made this new production possible.
